Interesting post Josh. I have always love JT's Mexico and all that anticipation really makes that song groove. Just love it. Thanks for analyzing it! I now have a much better appreciation for it.
Online TABs for this song that I've found are totally wrong, but fortunately Chordify gets it mostly right (my transcription skills are still very rudimentary...so this sort of app is very helpful).
Bog standard chords - E, A, D, and G.
What strikes me about this song is how she uses her vocal melodies, vocal phrasing, and dynamics to do something much more interesting. I'm just trying to do it on acoustic guitar, but I think it will (eventually!) sound good there too.
Any interest in doing one of your deeper dives on this? Would be interested in your insights.
Your comment about singing over the riff "might not be straightforward at all"...very true.
And yet I find I can do it - sorta kinda - it's very fragile, but it's starting to happen. A few months ago it would have been inconceivable to even attempt something like that, but now I think it's attainable...with a lot of practice.
Feels somewhat miraculous...like I'm finally transitioning from a struggling wannabe to an actual amateur musician.
Great article. Music is so many things. I never would have put it into the same category as hospitality, but it fits perfectly. Thanks!

The crazy thing is that you never actually “arrive”—you get better and better, but your standards rise alongside your skills. Enjoy the journey!
Here's Bully (stage name, I think) playing it solo - on a bass, with a few pedals.

To me, one of the signs of a great song is being able to strip it down to the simplest arrangement, and it's still compelling.
I'm about 2 years into learning the guitar at age 65, after multiple failed attempts earlier in life.
Have become obsessed with learning this song "Lose You" by Bully / Soccer Mommy - released a few weeks ago.

that's cool! kinda reminds me of Veruca Salt—the sonic textures & the way the two vocals blend
