"Play down a whole step"??? Do you mean you down tuned your guitar by two semi-tones? Or do you mean you've transposed the arrangement down, but play it in standard tuning?

yes! I bring two guitars to my solo shows: one standard tuning, and one down a minor third (in D♭). For this I capo the first fret so I'm down two semi tones.
Yeah, that DbMaj7 is a real finger twister for me, and I never got past it in previous attempts. But I'm better now...maybe time to attempt it yet again.
Also, reminded me that one of the really cool things about this song is how the verse chord progression descends chromatically.
